3. The Ice Incident

The Ice Incident

It was a chilly morning at the yard and David was cold. (obviously) He kicked at a random clod of dirt on the ground and rubbed his hands together to keep warm. Trust Abigail to organise a cross country lesson on a day like this. Yesterday had been nice and sunny and the day before that was like a summer's day but noooo she had to choose today - the coldest day of the year - to go gallivanting about the countryside. He scowled. He hadn't even brought anything warm with him. According to Abigail, he'd 'warm up once you're jumping' David pulled a face. He didn't even like jumping all that much.
Abigail arrived with Tamarind and David didn't even pretend to be looking forward to the experience.

"Ok then David, I've set out a small course for you, nothing major. Tam'll take you over them fine. Just watch when you get over the water jump...you need to take a left straight after it or you'll end up going the wrong way!"

David nodded, patted Tam and got on board. Afer a quick warmup in the arena (although sadly not for David) they set off towards the jumping field.

David glanced behind him and when he was sure Abigail was out of sight, slowed to a walk. Ha! No jumping for him!
He got the fright of his life when he heard Abigail's voice booming out of nowhere. Tam shot off in canter and once he'd gained control, David looked back to see Abigail leaning out of the horsebox's cab window with a megaphone in one hand and a mug of hot tea in the other. She was being sensible and was nice and warm. "Come on Dave - no slacking!" He sighed, rolled his eyes and did a circle in canter before approaching the first jump - a small cross poles.

They cleared it brilliantly and then moved on to the next - a jump curiously shaped like two Innocent Smoothie bottles. Tam spooked a bit at the sight and jumped it wonkily which made David lose his balance and fall.

He picked himself up and caught Tam, who had started grazing. Abigail's voice echoed around them. "Well done..now get back on and do that again!" He did a mock salute and did as he was told, this time jumping it well.

Next was the water jump. To get to it he had to backtrack and pass Abigail, then gallop for a few hundred yards. Hopefully Abigail wouldn't be able to see or hear him. He was rubbish at water jumps...
By a sheer fluke (so he thought anyway) they cleared it first time round.

There was something different about the water, but he just couldn't think what.

He turned Tam to the right and looked for the next jump.
Something wasn't right...there wasn't a jump to be seen! He turned around and started to canter away until something caught his eye. It was another water jump..only this one was a drop into water instead of a jump over it.

That's strange he thought. I could have sworn she told me there was only one water jump...oh well...

He turned Tam towards it and he leapt into it, his forelegs well out in front of him like a professional event horse.
The next thing he knew they were standing perfectly still. There was no tremendous splash as horse and rider hit the water...only an eerie silence. Tam figetted on the spot and swished his tail. He didn't like it one bit.

David looked down tentatively.

It was ICE!

Tam couldn't take it any longer and bolted, making David fall. He got up instantly and tried to catch his horse. "Oi you! Get back here!"

Tam disappeared into the distance and David shook his fist angrily. Now what? Suddenly he heard a cracking noise. He gasped and before he could do anything, the ice gave way beneath his feet and David went flying!

He hit the water with a loud splash and resurfaced with a gasp. It was freezing cold and he could already feel his limbs going numb.

He scrabbled at a nearby ice floe and tried to pull himself onto it but everytime he tried, it just started sinking.
A couple of minutes went by and he was beginning to tire. It was so cold...he just wanted to sleep...

A sharp, clear whinny brought him out of it. Tam was standing on the edge, his reins loose over his head.
David swam over as quickly as he could - his numbed up legs and waterlogged jacket threatening to pull him under. He reached for the reins and after a few attempts, managed to grab hold of them. Tam backed up and pulled, hoisting David out of the water.

He lay there shivering until he heard someone running towards them. It was Abigail. She had seen Tam galloping towards her, riderless and had feared the worst. Luckily, she had the foresight to bring a blanket with her.

"Oh god, David I'm so sorry! I should have known the pond would have been frozen...I should never have let you ride in these conditions...here, put this round you and let's get you back home."

David nodded and hugged Tam gratefully. "Thanks boy..I owe you big time" he whispered, his teeth chattering loudly.

Ten minutes later they had arrived back at the yard. Abigail saw to Tam and David was given a mug of hot cocoa and sent straight to bed.

A couple of days later, David was well enough to go out and see Tamarind. He had been let out in one of the outdoor arenas for exercise as it was far too cold for him out in the field at night. As soon as he saw David approaching, the stallion bucked with excitement and trotted over to him at top speed.

David laughed and gave him a big hug. "I really can't thank you enough for saving me Tam. I wouldn't have lasted much longer if you hadn't come when you did. I just wish there was something I could give you, you know, as a sort of thank you present..."

"How about these? Will this do?" It was Abigail, and she was clutching a bundle of fresh carrots in each hand.

"Straight from the garden and he deserves every one!" She pointed to a trug by her feet which was full of apples. "Those are for him as well, as I know you're not so keen on apples David."

David laughed. "They're perfect!"
He gave Tam an apple and when he had finished it, offered him one of the carrots. Tam munched on it happily and nickered.

All was well...finally!

2. The Haunted Hack

The Haunted Hack

It was a cold October afternoon and everyone at EA Equestrian was feeling the chill. David had been talking to his favourite horse, Tamarind, when Abigail the yard manager approached him.

"Hi David, could you do me a huge favour and ride over to the village for me? I was going to get some treats for the horses but we're all out. I thought they could do with some cheering up as it's so cold"

David smiled and nodded. "Of course! I'll just get Tam groomed and tacked up."
He grabbed the nearest brush and gave him a quick clean before he made sure the bridle fitted him properly.

Abigail appeared a moment later with his saddle and a few minutes later they were ready to go. David put on his hat and got on.

He knew his clothes weren't ideal for riding in but he wouldn't be out for long...

They trotted out of the yard and soon came across a fork in the road. He knew that one led straight to the village and that the other to the moors. He had never ridden there before but he knew that you could get to the village from there via an old path - it just took slightly longer. He had plenty of time so he decided to take the left fork and ride on the moor.
It was an excellent place to hack up there, the breeze was cool and the views spectacular, yet there was something about them that give him shivers.
Ten minutes passed by and he hadn't reached the path yet. It was too late to turn back now and it was starting to get very dark. Suddenly Tam spooked and reared!

David went with him and managed to calm him down. What had scared him so much? He would never find out as the horse launched himself into the air again and then galloped full pelt across the hill.

When Tam had worn himself out, David relaxed and gave him a pat. He was worried though, Tam never reared... Something was definetly not right...

As he passed the old ruined castle again he saw a light in the distance. "The village!" He quietly nudged Tam forwards and they headed towards it at a brisk trot.

David gasped. It was the village all right...but it was different - much different. The tack-shop wasn't there and neither was the cafe. In fact, the more he looked around, the less he recognised. Every thing and person there seemed oddly drained of colour, like an old black and white print. It was distinctly odd and the hairs on the back of David's neck stood up for no apparent reason.

As they trotted towards where he knew Henry the grocer's shop was, David was aware of the crashing silence that surrounded them. Only Tam's steadily reassuring hoofbeats broke the stillness. Nervously, David dismounted and tied Tamarind to the side of the shop.

As he looked through the slightly dirty window he saw a collection of objects that he didn't remember the grocer stocking before.

Nervously, he looked up at the sign and gulped.

'Archibald and Son - Ironmongers - Est 1824'

Cautiously he approached the door and turned the creaking handle...

A man stood behind the counter in an old worn apron. He looked vaguely familar to David but he couldn't place him.

"Why hello there son, what can I get for ye the day?" The man said, smiling. "It's a chilly night tae be out and about an' that's for sure"

David smiled stiffly. "Umm..this is going to sound really strange, but could you tell me where and...when I am?"

The shopkeeper laughed. "Certainly lad! You are in the best Ironmongery shop in the land and the date is the thirty first of October 1864"

David paled. 1864?
He took a step back in shock and the shopkeeper's smile faded. "Are you all right lad? Here, I think you need a wee sit down."
He guided David to the door at the back of the shop and the next second he found himself seated in the biggest kitchen he had ever set eyes on.

The shopkeeper spoke but David didn't hear him. "Ah, here's the missus, she'll look efter you. I'd better get back out front..."

David looked up to see a short woman with curly hair approach him. "There, there lad, what's ailing you?"

He tried to explain what had happened but the woman was having none of it. "What you need is a good rest and something to eat. Aha!" She rummaged among the many items on the table and produced a ripe, shiny apple which she presented to David. "Here, eat this, it'll do you the world of good!"

David stood up and raised his voice.
No! Don't you understand me? I'm from 2007, not 1864!" The woman just laughed and David decided to leave.
This was getting far too weird.

Without another thought, he untied Tam and made a run for it.

They didn't stop galloping until they could see the comfortingly familiar shapes of the yard and stable block. As he pulled Tam back to an unsteady canter, her could make out Abigail's silhuette against the light from the floodlit outdoor arena. The sky was getting lighter the closer he got to it.
Had they been out all night?

"Ah David, you're back! I meant to ask you to ask Henry if he had any carrots in - we're out of them as well!" Abigail's words troubled him. "Weren't you worried about us?" he said as he dismounted and began to untack Tam. "I mean, we were out for hours!"

Abigail laughed. "Hours? You weren't gone twenty minutes!"
David gasped. "But...but...no! It got really dark and we went back in time...1864....ironmongers...scary... ghosts...."

"Time travel?" Abigail roared with laughter. "I don't think so Dave...you're not The Doctor you know!"

David sulked. Abigail didn't believe him.

Typical.

He was just about to put Tam away when Abigail called over to him.

"Not yet David, I'm just going to give Andrea here a quick five minute ride on Tam. She's thinking about having lessons here and she wants to 'have a go' beforehand to see how she does."

David turned round and stepped back again in shock.

"Hello there...My, you look peaky! I brought an apple for your horse but you look like you need it more." She held it out ot him. " Go on...it'll do you the world of good!"

"Aaaaaaaarghh!"

The End...

1. The Confidence Booster

(My first proper PS, first posted way back on the 13th of October, 2007!)

The Confidence Booster

It was a chilly morning at EA Equestrian and Abigail was cold. Sighing, she trudged through the mud and long grass and called Tamarind.
"Taaaaaaaaaaam...come on boy...time for work!"
She stamped the ground a couple of times to warm up and was soon greeted by a loud whinny from the far side of the field. The Lusitano stallion cantered up to her and she gave him a polo and put on his halter, whilst checking that his rug was still intact. (Tam liked to destroy his fieldwear quite a lot)

She led Tam back to the yard, put him in his box and fed and derugged him. Abigail checked her watch. Sue was booked in for a lesson in a couple of hours time and she had so much to do before then.

An hour or so later and with Tam now fed and watered, the only thing left to do was groom him and tack him up. Abigail enlisted David, one of the yard's best handlers to hold him while she tackled his beautiful flowing mane.

Once groomed she carefully put on his saddle. David asked her why she didn't give him a bridle but she told him that he goes much better bitless, what with all his natural horsemanship training and whatnot.

Now fully tacked up, all there was to do was wait for Sue to arrive. Luckily it wasn't long before she drove up, apologising for her lateness. Abigail helped her to get on and asked her what she wanted to do in the lesson.

Sue explained that she had recently had a bad fall from her Arabian - Magic - and had really lost confidence in her riding. She didn't want to canter and definetly didn't want to risk jumping as that's how she had come off in the first place! Abigail smiled and told her that she could do as much or as little as she wanted.

"Don't worry about Tam - he's totally bombproof! You'll have your confidence back in no time!"

Sue smiled and they walked across the car park to the arena.
"Right" said Abigail. "I'd like you to warm up for me please with a couple of trots on both reins and a twenty metre circle at C"

Sue did as she was asked and within minutes Tam was parading around like a natural showhorse.

Pleased with her so far, Abigail set up some trotting poles and asked Sue to trot over them as well to improve Tam's movement.

Abigail grinned. "Well done, that was really good. Now then...would you like to have a wee canter? Tam'll be fine, I promise!"
Sue considered it and decided to give it a go. After all, she couldn't trot ALL the time and Tam seemed like a really nice horse!

"Sure!"

As she asked him to canter, her right stirrup slipped from her foot and she suddenly felt unsafe and started to tip forwards. Thinking she wanted him to speed up, Tam increased his pace and flew round the school!

Sue clung on tightly to his mane and cried "Abigail! Heeeeeelp!"
Abigail rushed over and managed to grab a rein and brought him back to walk.

"Are you alright Sue?" Abigail patted Tam's nose softly. "Just sit back and relax...you're alright now." Sue took a deep breath, fixed her stirrup and relaxed. She wasn't fine...she felt great!

"I want to jump"

This statement took Abigail by surprise - she had expected Sue to avoid jumping altogether after that runaway canter, but no, Sue was obviously much more confident than she had previously thought!

"Just a little one!" Sue laughed. "I don't want to jinx myself!"
Abigail chuckled and put up a small jump for her. "Is that ok?" Sue smile.d "It's perfect. I need to push myself or I'll never get over that fall!" Sue nudged Tam forwards and they popped over it like it was nothing at all! (which it really wasn't!)

Sue trotted back into the middle of the school with a massive grin on her face.

"Higher please!"

Abigail did as she was asked and raised the jump to a full block cross, then stood back to watch them jump it.
Sue trotted around the school once, cantered in one of the corners and turned into the fence, going into jumping position before they took off...

Before she knew it they were up, up and over!

She brought Tamarind back to walk and Abigail cheered! "See? You can do it!"

Sue grinned, she certainly could!

Abigail decided to finish the lesson there and then - to finish on such a good note was beneficial for both horse and rider. Sue got off and Abigail disappeared off into the feedroom in search for some tasty treats!
"Here you go" she said, presenting Sue with an apple and Tamarind with a haynet. "You both deserve these. Rewards all round!"

Sue thanked Abigail and gave Tam a massive hug. "Thank you both so much, I don't think I would have ever got back to where I was before the fall if it wasn't for this lesson! It's been a real confidence booster!" And with that, Sue went home, much happier and much more confident!

Abigail decided to let Tamarind have a little break between this and his next lesson as an extra reward, so she untacked him and let him loose in the school.

"You've outdone yourself today boy...enjoy!"

Tamarind galloped into the middle, threw his head up and reared!

Abigail smiled.

"Showoff"
